PLOT ENGAGEMENT (ARCHIVED)

> PLOT ENGAGEMENT (ARCHIVED)

What is Plot Engagement and how does it work within Meadowlark? This is the page where players can come discuss with us how to facilitate plots within the setting. However, there will be occasions where a plot doesn't work within Meadowlark's world, and we'll suggest alternative routes. For small worldbuilding or gameplay details, please direct your question to the FAQ. If you're ever not sure if you're at the right page, don't worry—we'll help you get it sorted out. We know we have a load of info!

WHEN WILL YOU HEAR BACK?

◉ All Plot Engagement answers go out on Sunday, except during events.
◉ The deadline to submit a question and ensure you'll hear back from us on Sunday is 11:59 PM UTC on Saturday.

PLOT ENGAGEMENT INCLUDES

◉ Player plots! If you'd like your character to become a mafia boss, this is your place to start. Typically, this involves anything that could impact the setting or other player characters.
◉ Character career advancement that gives the character additional power or status within the setting.
◉ Metaplot exploration and information! We plan all events to give characters something to explore after the event ends. This is the place to do it!

SUBMISSION TIPS

◉ Specify what your character is looking for when they're investigating. What questions are they asking and what angle are they trying to explore?
◉ If you have a specific goal in mind but don't know how to reach it, please let us know.
◉ If you link a thread to us, please summarize it! That helps us process the plot in question.
◉ Don't worry about not knowing the setting like the back of your hand before you submit the plot—that's up to us! We're here to help you with any adjustments to get you on the right track.

NOTES & THINGS THAT YOU CAN HANDWAVE

◉ Characters always start out in entry level positions. Characters can update their skill sets to the 2512 standard through paid apprenticeships or internships.

◈ If a character is advancing within a major corporation (as noted on the Setting or Locations page) or one of its subsidiaries, we will need to approve this advancement.
◈ If a character becomes a supervisor at a local bar or other small business, we do not need to approve this advancement.

◉ Joining the police force within a city requires three months of IC training (six months OOC).
◉ We'll approve whether someone has social media fame, but we will not be providing social media follower counts. Once you have a plot for how to use those followers, that's where we step in!
◉ All Morningstar business goes on our Morningstar page. Please feel free to discuss specific plots here (including joining), and go there for signups and anything else.
◉ Characters getting jobs, finding apartments, participating in the fighting rings, getting married, making workplace friends, the creation of minor NPCs, etc. do not need to be run by us. Please let us know if these expand into player plots or other plot bits!

Thanks mods! Can I get some clarification on some things? When it comes to Angel acclimatizing/doing her homework, are these things that you'd like to see threaded out in full, or alluded to with the passage of OOC time/general game involvement?

This is awesome, thanks so much!!

We'll assume it takes some time to figure this stuff out (re: the flags and the fact that someone has already been trying to cover for agents) and run with it for an IC week or two, probably!

Going forward, they'll invest some time into trying to crack the encryption. They'll be doing it more to figure out who wrote it than anything - it's helping MS agents so they won't want to mess it up/draw attention to it. Is it possible for them to crack one layer of the encryption, then hit some kind of alarm that kicks them out? Would that impact their chances of identifying the hacker?

And re: identifying the hacker, I'm assuming their two main approaches would be: straightforward hacker stuff, trying to find real info/trace it back somewhere and/or they could focus on stuff like: identifying flavor/signature things in the code, and pursuing social connections w/hacker circles to dig up info that way.

ALSO related to some other plot stuff! Just to be clear, since Peggy and Fitz are teaming up with Morningstar - would there be any info about a hacker officially working with MS that lines up with what Johnny and Daisy find, or is it a Mystery TM?

Thanks again!

Hey mods!

One of the "missions" that Keith is undertaking for Peggy and Fitz right off the bat is to look into the shrines and see if they've popped up all over the world. Since he obviously can't travel all over, he'll be using Cooltalk and other social media to find out what he can. He'll be trying a lot of different search terms to pull it off.

Would he find evidence of shrines in other cities? And if he can't use social media to find evidence, can he reach out to other Morningstar branches to keep an eye out for them, and send along images to look for them? And if he can't do that himself, can he have Peggy and Fitz do that for him, or maybe put him in touch as the person looking into it?

I know there are other characters chasing this plot, so I'm very happy to loop in those players if needed!

Hi mods!

Just exploring job options for Jiang Cheng here, wanted to let you know that he would be approaching the relevant Morningstar parties about possibly joining the recruitment/training for NAPD when they return from New Tokyo? He's had plenty of battle / military experience back home and has had to take on a leadership role from an early age to deal with crisis / leading a rebel force to overthrow tyrannical dictatorship (of sorts), so he would definitely want to be involved in something that is disciplined and structured like the justice / law enforcement system!

I've already read through your responses re: police force to Bellamy and Aranea so I think I've got the gist of the training period and all the surrounding bits relating to it, but I've just got some extra very minor questions, let me know if these need to be directed elsewhere!

#1: Being dropped in New Tokyo, would the records for the new arrivals then begin from New Tokyo, so they are going to be considered moving (for want of a better word) to New Amsterdam when the PCs go back? Or will they be retroactively added to their existing citizen records for New Amsterdam?

#2: Just nitpicky questions re: NAPD, is there an option for the trainees (and of course, properly instated police officers) to be offered some kind of dorm or otherwise general housing units that's provided within the structures of the NAPD?

#3a: What would be available as an option for Jiang Cheng if he would like to move up further within the NAPD? I know this is going to be a long term thing and certainly won't be happening anytime soon, but I just wanted to map out a career path for him as a general long term plan I can keep in mind. e.g. CID/Detective sort from a beat cop?

#3b: In terms of CID/Detective ... Would there be a fair bit of undercover police investigation happening in terms of dealing with the city's gangs/underground/general shady illegal business? How well is that network run in NAPD and how secluded and secure are those agents from having their real identity leaked? I know this involves creating false identities and stuff which is.... difficult... but I wanted to possibly look into narcotics agents and things of this undercover sort of nature so just wanted to get the question out there!

#4: Does the NAPD have any quasi-military units within (like SWAT) or are those more universally handled by UNA if there is any need for that? How readily available would they be in terms of rapid developing crisis and would the police have any access to those sort of resources in terms of emergency situations?

Sorry if these have been addressed already!

hello mods! sorry to be getting back to you so late. the event and the new character stuff kind of ate my brain but this was on my mind and with things settling i wanted to not leaving y'all hanging after you helped me out. so, thanks for bearing with me.

so, after giving it some thought and trying to play a few things out, illya's had a few incidences of defending both himself and those very select few he cares about outside of the fighting rings but still in the arena. he doesn't turncoat at all so even if he believes the argument of those he's with to be wrong, he won't care in that he will stand up for them and use his fists to prove that (i mean, come on, he worked with solo for awhile and saved that butthead's life many times despite not liking him much).

he's been around the fighting rings since his arrival to the city and thus, has probably made connections (he wouldn't go so far as to say friends) with those that run the matches. he wouldn't be an errand boy, running for coffee or anything, but if they needed a favor (someone removed etc), he's a regular enough to do the job for a little extra money on the side. don't bite the hand that feeds you and all.

outside of the rings, he's been obliquely involved in some morningstar operations though he prefers to keep back and do things his own way. but again, those in charge are those he cares about so he helps despite again not completely agreeing with their philosophy or outright trusting those in charge (the faceless npcs, not the pcs that have been taking the reins lately).

his reputation, if there is one, would be one of quiet but ever present. he doesn't like to talk much but he will be the first person to stand in front of someone that needs to be defended. his temper is quick and his skills quite varied and his longevity with the kgb says that he's willing to take orders and work his ass off to get where he wants to be.

anyway, thanks again for bearing with me on this!

hi mods!

fitz and kylo have been discussing the captured morningstar agents from the january raid (september ic) and spitballing thoughts on how they could potentially track down and eventually rescue them from una custody.

my thoughts were, essentially:

#1: looping in anyone that was investigating the "leaks" that lead to the raid, hopefully making the connection between that and the captured morningstar agents from the initial drop-off. also making use of any un contacts they can muster to see if there's any word on the agents.

#2: contacting tech savy folk like daisy and johnny and looking into ways to track the implants of the captured agents. if they are unable to do this - and we assume that the una would have some means of scrambling the implants - then tracking them through the software/tech that.

#3: narrowing down likely locations, scoping those out and then formulating the best approach - kylo, himself, will lean toward something with a small group of people that can move in quickly and cleanly, retrieve the agents or their bodies and get out as quickly as possible. perhaps they'll be able to field test fitz's electro-shock devices and the new implant scrambling masks he's working on.

#4: rescue the agents; the exact plan itself might need further development but the gist was to use the electro-devices (fitz has mentioned being able to adapt them into projectiles) to disable any una soldiers at a distance, scrambling whatever software they use to predict opponents movements if not outright shutting them down, locating the agents and breaking them out, and hopefully getting out alive.

this plan is subject to change as it would be opened up to other players to offer their opinions and feedback. this is largely to check feasibility.

god i'm sorry this is so late, but thanks so much for the info! i hope it's not too late for this, but i think i will take you up on the offer to have him go by Dawn in the real world and network — so dawn.masterson (thanks for picking this surname riku) if possible!

for the fighting rings, this is more just for my own reference than anything, but is there a baseline age for people who sign up for the fights? i.e., are most participants adults or are there teens mixed in as well?

THANK YOU FOR THIS we are so, so excited about these developments for Peggy and Fitz — and others! Morningstar is a big reason we wanted to join the game and plot, so doing this player plot has been a dream.

We're working on an ooc post to spread this information now, but we'll let you know if anything arises from that and reply with the new Morningstar safehouse/headquarters proposal soon.

hello mods!

as we gear back into new amsterdam, emma (jyn erso) and i have been looking into the girls' new apartment, which we are affectionately calling henceforth the barbie dream house thanks to its dreamscape origins. we have some questions about the building, and are curious how much leeway we have in playing with this! the below is kind of a mix between "here's where we're at" and "here are our questions", so we'd appreciate any heads up if anything is a no-go in game.

— we know the high-rise is located in the financial district, and from my understand of the setting, this would be considered a more well-to-do area of the city for people to have established residency. for visual & concept inspiration purposes, we've been playing with the new amsterdam equivalent of the real-world mckenzie building in downtown seattle, which is built as a luxury high-rise for affluent clientele in the city.

— we'd like to know if it would be kosher to play off some of the real-world inspiration's special amenities (things like their rooftop garden, dog spa, on-site concierge services, et cetera). in addition, we'd like to know what kind of futuristic adaptations to expect in the building.

for example: in the mckenzie building, there is 24-hour staffed security & a welcome desk, and all visitors are required to be on an approved list. if an outside vendor like a postmates clerk or a grocery delivery service comes, they are met by staffers who take the items and then personally deliver, preventing any "unvetted" people from accessing private resident floors. we'd expect something similar to be in place here, though with perhaps adjustments for scanning neural ids instead of checking physical drivers licenses for guest access to things like elevators and residences. if any of this is off-kilter or doesn't make sense, please let us know!

— daisy in particular would make it a point to learn about the people she'd be living in somewhat close proximity to. though she wouldn't go so far as to plant bugs or other surveillance equipment in public areas, she would use more traditional skills of eavesdropping and social engineering (posing as someone a little more cheerful and friendly, striking conversations in elevators or lobbies, et cetera) to get information about the other residents of the building and who they might be. is there anyone in particular that might be interesting or the subject of rumor that she could learn about? there isn't a specific avenue she'd plan to pursue here icly, and oocly i'm really open to any ideas you have for this!

thanks in advance!

hello part two!

to avoid confusion, here's a separate comment/question regarding social media presence in the wake of the dreamscapes! i'd like to know what kind of social media following/presence my characters might have after their recent hijinks (or any at all)

for daisy:
— after the events of oktoberfest, she's been made aware by other PCs that her features have been spotted on a few shrines in the city! since then, she's been enjoying scoping them out, and has posted a few pictures of herself on cooltalk in front of these shrines with cheesy captions like "WHO'S THAT GIRL" or similar
— after waking up in new tokyo, her cooltalk has started to get a number of comments on photos and gifs of sparring & training montages regarding the monster attacks and her efforts. she doesn't respond to every comment, but when she does, it's typically something cheeky rather than a direct yes/no. (i'd like to think this would only fuel the fire in the same way that actors giving cheeky responses to fan questions only makes people more interested, but i could be wrong here!)
— she has seen a few of the videos of the PCs fighting monsters, but hasn't tried to host them on her own account. she's seen too many people in the "real" world have their accounts wiped by covert organizations, and she'd rather that not happen to her. however, is it possible for her to save the videos on a future equivalent of a private drive without posting publicly?

for caroline:
— after waking up in the train to new tokyo, she was challenged to a drinking battle by takeshi kovacs (or... she might have convinced him to challenge her, but she accepted). she managed to get him drunk enough to completely pass out at the bar, something that was filmed by prompto and posted online. a few of the PCs (laura moon, etc) would possibly have either cooltalk-equivalent-of-retweeting'd it or commented as well!
— nothing critical or worldshaking here, but she does use cooltalk quite a bit, in the "basic white girl" future equivalent of instagram. she'd have posted a lot while in new tokyo of the recovery efforts, #preserve and so forth, with most of the content being a mix of carefully curated shots for the 'gram of other people/places/things and then just real cute selfies. because selfies are important.
— thanks to the monthly cr meme (really, thanks, huge fan of this change) i'll be looking into having her partner with other cooltalk influencers for her positivity project soon!
— also: are there any special trends for young adult / teen media that caroline would become aware of? i'm thinking of the #trashtag challenge that's currently a big thing on social media or the ALS ice bucket challenge from a few years ago, but i'm open to any ideas you might have!

HELLO MODS

So given that we're all about to head back into NA I wanted to touch base real quick regarding some more details about the poisoning plot + pitch what I think and make sure I'm on the right track.

So if I'm understanding things correctly, Damian will be slashed with a poisoned weapon that will kind of sedate him at first. Will he be capable of finishing the fight and coming out on top, or is it potent enough to knock him flat? How long will the symptoms last?

And how long does he have before the effects of the poison start hitting him really hard? Self-medicating isn't a solution, but how long does doing so alleviate the symptoms? He can't ignore it forever but he'll definitely try to ignore it until he realizes something is really wrong.

and unrelated to damian but for tommy and billy, about how many subscribers would they have at this point if they're posting consistently + doing videos with prompto + posting pictures of the relief effort and themselves helping out, and would they be able to start getting sponsors?

Hey there!

I have a few questions for you all pertaining to Lan Wangji over here.

Lan Wangji is profoundly interested in arts. Given the relatively rich information already established here, I was curious to see how he could incorporate himself successfully and within the guidelines you have in mind.

1. Are there any potential job openings available for individuals interested in teaching art classes to adult learners in galleries or museums? On that same token, would these galleries occasionally capture individuals of greater sway for corporate events? Or, perhaps, of greater artistic sway?

1a. If these individuals are drawn into this sphere, is it possible for Lan Wangji to become acquainted with them through possible art pieces or the movements/information of interest through that? In scrolling through, his methods are very unusual and he can make do with what he has. He is known for his perfection overall, but he has a unique skill set (song writing, music playing (specifically the guqin), likely clay work, and so on) that could bring a very nostalgic appeal. He's also more geared toward philosophical/political expressions and ruminations, given his absolute focus on political/philosophical pieces of the time. Of course, this isn't all-encompassing. He's also a fan of romantic literature and can make great use of that as well if that might appeal to anyone (ROMANTICISM...).

2. Lan Wangji is a noted calligraphist, having only made a singular error in the time that Wei Wuxian has known him. Knowing there is no paper and knowing that Lan Wangji has a potential outlet toward graffiti (one drink does the trick and if the results are for the greater good...), how likely is it that someone writing in otherwise perfect (and ancient) script would be noticed in any capacity? Moreover, this extends into general artistic ability as he is also known to draw in these states (though crudely), which definitely belies an innate ability when sober.

3. Are there any potential routes given this information that I am not considering? I am absolutely jazzed to hear any of your thoughts.

Thanks in advance!
