PLOT ENGAGEMENT

> PLOT ENGAGEMENT

What is Plot Engagement and how does it work within Meadowlark? This is the page where players can come discuss with us how to facilitate plots within the setting. However, there will be occasions where a plot doesn't work within Meadowlark's world, and we'll suggest alternative routes. For small worldbuilding or gameplay details, please direct your question to the FAQ. If you're ever not sure if you're at the right page, don't worry—we'll help you get it sorted out. We know we have a load of info!

In addition, you do not need to have a complete plot in mind when you come to us. We aim for plot engagement to be more of a conversation between us and our players. If we propose a plot angle and it's not to your liking, we're more than happy to work with you to come up with something more to your tastes.

WHEN WILL YOU HEAR BACK?

◉ All Plot Engagement answers go out on Sunday, except during events.
◉ The deadline to submit a question and ensure you'll hear back from us on Sunday is 11:59 PM UTC on Saturday.

PLOT ENGAGEMENT INCLUDES

◉ Player plots! If you'd like your character to become a mafia boss, this is your place to start. Typically, this involves anything that could impact the setting or other player characters.
◉ Character career advancement that gives the character additional power or status within the setting.
◉ Metaplot exploration and information! We plan all events to give characters something to explore after the event ends. This is the place to do it!

SUBMISSION TIPS

◉ Specify what your character is looking for when they're investigating. What questions are they asking and what angle are they trying to explore?
◉ If you have a specific goal in mind but don't know how to reach it, please let us know.
◉ If you link a thread to us, please summarize it! That helps us process the plot in question.
◉ Don't worry about not knowing the setting like the back of your hand before you submit the plot—that's up to us! We're here to help you with any adjustments to get you on the right track.
◉ Plot engagement is meant to help with IC play so that characters can continue to interact. If you're not sure how to loop in others, let us know so that we can work with you on it! While this page is meant to be a conversation between players and mods, we know that the fun part of a plot is how it can change character arcs, spice up CR, and more.

NOTES & THINGS THAT YOU CAN HANDWAVE

◉ Characters always start out in entry level positions. Characters can update their skill sets to the 2512 standard through paid apprenticeships or internships.

◈ If a character is advancing within a major corporation (as noted on the Setting or Locations page) or one of its subsidiaries, we will need to approve this advancement.
◈ If a character becomes a supervisor at a local bar or other small business, we do not need to approve this advancement.

◉ Joining the police force within a city requires three months of IC training (six months OOC). There will be instances where this changes, and we'll keep you looped in on that.
◉ We'll approve whether someone has social media fame, but we will not be providing social media follower counts. Once you have a plot for how to use those followers, that's where we step in!
◉ All Morningstar business goes on our Morningstar page. Please feel free to discuss specific plots here (including joining), and go there for signups and anything else.
◉ Characters getting jobs, finding apartments, participating in the fighting rings, getting married, making workplace friends, the creation of minor NPCs, etc. do not need to be run by us. Please let us know if these expand into player plots or other plot bits!

Hey mod pals!

Laura's definitely still very interested in going after Johann, and I would love to get in on that with everyone else who's on Team Hunt That Guy.

The motivation there is 50% personal vendetta and 50% reuniting Judas with the other AI - even if he managed to bust himself out and is now off doing his own thing she'll want to do right by Cassius, and him, and... humanity ... so I'd like to focus on that too if it's not already inherently part of a Johann hunt. If there are any players I should hit up about either part instead of hoarding it all under this Cassius help umbrella please do let me know!

hiii!

so, kai is gonna be stealing from hospitals in the meantime while they're currently in disarray! i ended up bringing the blood supply q over here and i kind of like the idea for kai to be able to get his own supply through his criminal connections. i don't mind el giving him a verbal slap on the wrist and suggesting an alternative source either though! he just needs his daily dose of protein. it's very important to his stomach.

as for the snipe stuff, he isn't super ambitious, so he doesn't want to kickstart his own criminal empire or anything. i think he'll just want to resume a similar role he had in the aerie. sort of a jack-of-all-trade/information broker/the go-to guy for complicated problems that needs to be resolved on the downlow. a sort of neutral third party in the criminal underground. he will definitely be reaching out to all of his connections from the aerie to reestablish connections and milk them for what they're worth. he probably has a lot of aerie-related dirt on people, which he isn't above using against someone. very little qualms about blackmailing and manipulating somebody of a higher status for his own personal gain/advantage, which will probably be made easier with his snipe status since apparently a lot of people are scared of him now and that's wonderful.

mostly, he's just here to make $$$ and have fun, so he'll be putting his hand in a lot of different cookie jars to see what flavor he'll pluck out.

Heyo!

Yeah, Lance is definitely not expecting Morningstar to be a huge fan of him at this point, no worries. Although I do have to ask about:

They also came to the city because they were impressed by the Displaced. Lance's actions have threatened this arrangement

Since Lance has only been challenging Gaby specifically, and everything he's said and done has been on the Displaced's network (or in the safehouse), I'm a little unclear on how anything would've altered normal agents' opinions of Displaced (unless of course Gaby warned them he's a nightmare, which would be understandable) to the point where it could threaten that. Unless it was more that Gaby is nervous Displaced will turn against Morningstar?

Also re: corruption, reach, all that, no problem; that's what I figured OOC, but IC Morningstar feels more powerful than they might be because they do have a lot of power over the Displaced through the whole arrangement of relying on the IDs, the safehouse thing, etc. So even if in the grand scheme of things they might not be hugely influential, to Displaced--or at least the kind of Displaced who might be really sensitive to potential issues with relying on an organization they barely know--they feel like they are.

That aside, onto tech stuff!

Okay, so the scrambling stuff is more like wearing a ski mask on the street in that it's super obvious and suspicious just in itself, so it's only useful if you're already doing something suspicious in the first place and just need to hide identity?

Sounds like the other options are mostly out (though noted about the little hints of plot stuff to maybe look into!), so going slightly adjacent to this; with very prevalent tracking, does anyone (like, say, dispatch) track where police officers are? Would this be potential information that could be gotten a hold of (with proper plotting and IC planning and all that sort of thing) so as to just be able to avoid police entirely, if only for short periods of time?

And excellent re: Cooltalk; he's gonna hate it a bit but it should be good times for me.

1. super fast i just want to clarify that it was not a disappointing reveal in the grand scheme (i dig it), just more personally i felt like i missed out on the immediate excitement bc i stayed in the au. i also had tons of fun with the plot and definitely want to keep running on the baseline cassian has built up with it! i am excited there's more! thanks mods c: i'll slide back into this later!!

1! He's initially planning to reach out to anyone who's listening, via cooltalk or other public channels, but if one group is more willing to take what he's saying on board then he'll direct his time for towards them. This seems to be the newer group of post-aerie worshipers from what you've said!

1.5 Yeah, Thor would definitely go looking for wherever the source of people's information is! He heard about Ball from Quentin and is very interested in finding out about the current leader, so that's a lead he'll definitely follow up on.

2. good to know! Would an option for getting meat into the city via a van meeting him at the walls be an option?

3. okay i will hit them up and continue thinking about how this can happen!

Murphy will tell them everything he knows and he'll do it without hesitation. He'll go into as much detail as they want about the gods and the creation of the Aerie and what being chosen entailed. (I don't actually know most of the details here but he'd give them everything he knows and answer all their follow-up questions with straight honesty, same as he did when he was taken hostage.) From his tone, he doesn't find any of this spiritually significant or profound or precious, so why would he hold onto any of it? He has no interest in protecting the gods' secrets.

He'll also say he's not sure if the rebel who kidnapped and interrogated him is Displaced but that he'll be keeping an eye out for that face and get back to them with a name if he can catch it.

Other stuff in his preliminary report!:

  • From what he's heard, newcomers who arrived during the Aerie were escorted over from New Tokyo by the Displaced who'd already returned, but he doesn't know more than that. The newcomers are all cagey and suspicious of the other Displaced, so they're not chatty, but he'll work on it.

  • So far, the Displaced seem curious about the gods and there are some people talking about trying to "connect" with them, to figure out whether they're a threat. Others are talking about trying to prevent the gods from interfering any further, though no one's pitched a real plan about how to stop them. He'll keep listening.

  • Henries is a great big mystery to everyone, but he'll let them know if anything comes up.

  • He hasn't had any visions. :'(

i was going to have kai work as a bartender but i like the idea of having him oversee deals and make sure nobody is causing trouble in the pub too, especially since he might use this as his own base for the occasional shady business or two. if it's plausible, then maybe he can do both.

i sort of figured that he would have to jump through more than a few hoops to get this accomplished, but since he believes that this is something that's worth the effort, he's going to do what he can to turn it into a reality. what avenues can he take to start building up on his political ties? i'm assuming that his status as a cardinal in the aerie could probably give him an in into certain circles, so he can do some reconnecting there.

since the aerie has pretty much ruined any chances of him staying incognito, there isn't much reason for him to stay out of the public's eye anymore. as far as his new business is concerned, he'll keep everything aboveboard and legal, but i'm interested in having him develop relationships with engineers and suppliers from the night mod, particularly for his more personal projects. he's probably gonna be opening up shop to commission requests ranging from upgrading household appliances to creating a better model of a cybernetic body part as well as doing general repairs.

mostly, his business will be used to earn some money and help people out, so he might eventually design and sell cheap and affordable products that can achieve this goal. he'll make sure people are aware that he wants to give back to the community, whether it be giving a percentage of his profits to humanitarian efforts or lending a helping hand with local/government projects for free. depending on how successful his business gets, he might start to delve into new tech and innovations, opening up the door for government and maybe corporate contracts if they want to utilize his skills and expertise. (his tech and engineering skills are well-known in the aerie, so i'm sure that'll spark some interest.)

the only thing that he'll absolutely refuse to dabble in is weapons manufacturing. that's a hard no. but i think this earth is further behind than tony's in certain technological areas (like nanotech), so he might use his knowledge to his advantage in advancing his business, such as acquiring a loan, attracting investors, etc. he has actually helped out in both new tokyo and new amsterdam with maintenance and repair work, so i'm sure that might have earned him some brownie points with the locals. hopefully that'll help ease him along in starting and running a new business in the city.

let me know your thoughts! i'm flexible in terms of what he can and cannot achieve here.

Oooo I love that idea. Were Quentin to put up something asking if people wanted to investigate the ruin and do that, inviting new people or characters who weren't there in the start, would that be an acceptable outing?

    Sounds good!

I think part of the thing here is that although OOC we know about Morningstar's motives and history and all that, IC it's something where it really depends on the character how it comes across to them, if that makes sense? Like OOC I know Morningstar is just helping out, but IC a character who has reason to be suspicious of an organization going through all this trouble purely out of the goodness of their hearts might not be as inclined to believe it, especially if they feel like they're expected to be appropriately thankful for something they never asked for in the first place. For those characters it feels like there are strings attached, even if they're purely social (and even if they don't actually exist.)

And that's basically what got Lance off on the wrong foot with Gaby; their initial conversation on his post felt like an attack for just asking questions, which is one of those huge red flags in almost any situation that there's something that's being hidden (some frustration at answering the same question over and over is something he'd consider normal, but not quite that kind of hostility.)

But after they talked more and he spoke with other Morningstar agents he was pretty much back to neutral on Gaby (and more positive on the rest of Morningstar as a whole) until the safehouse thing before the Aerie; as far as he was concerned, if the Displaced are running things, then it felt like a major overstep for her to do that (especially instead of just talking to him.) And then with how their conversation (or at least the first part of it, since once they got to talking about the messages that was fine) went, he was pretty much back to being incredibly suspicious of her.

But as far as the network conversation goes, like he told Clarke he was very specifically not mentioning Morningstar (or anyone else) as the people to be upset with, because it wasn't about that; of course new arrivals could probably put the pieces together, but they could do that without him ever having said anything. So as far as he's concerned, what this all translates to is 'you can't talk about this at all' because it would always reflect back, and then Gaby's message basically reaffirmed that to him (and that it seemed like she was willing to get back at him personally by threatening the Displaced as a whole very much didn't help.)

Also, for some extra context, Lance got murdered by his own organization at home for investigating corruption, and then that basically happened again in the Aerie, so he's even more on edge about this sort of things than usual, so like. Perfect storm and all that.

So basically, tl;dr Lance is very suspicious and doesn't like Gaby personally due to their interactions, but also wasn't actually doing anything to try to cause problems; he doesn't want anything to happen to other Morningstar agents or to her, even though he doesn't like her. But that's all IC stuff; OOC the only confusion I had was on the details of the safehouse (like who was actually running things/making final decisions.) Hopefully that all makes sense too and kind of explains what I'd been working with IC and OOC!

I have a few questions stemming off this and one is mostly clarification about the world:

    • Is it common for people in the upper class to execute their own variety of vigilante justice, or was this sort of a one-off? Do they usually contact police forces over things like this or take matters into their own hands? There isn't much under the Justice heading in the setting outside of mentions of rehabilitation through labor for crimes so I'm really interested in how crime is actually handled on a justice system level of arrest/trials/conviction/et cetera.

    • Nate's interest in Giles-Bell largely stemmed from his theory about someone at the top of a big corporation (which turned out to be Jimmy) utilizing mercenaries to do the grunt work of keeping an eye on the Displaced, as though they were some sort of investment. He has confirmation on this now, so I suppose with that in mind his role working for Riverside is mostly Professional Gambler for the House (TM) now, since he no longer has a serious need to follow mercenary leads. I don't think Nate was ever super duplicitous about his intentions at Riverside, since he agreed to work for them for their monetary gain and (on the side) see what he could learn about their beef with the mega-corps, so I am slightly confused about [Maybe his role there gets found out, for instance] as in, who is doing the finding? Riverside? Langley? Or other Displaced (this seems less likely because a number of them know he already works there)?

What sort of repercussions would happen from Langley knowing he works part-time for the mob? What sort of repercussions would happen from Riverside knowing Nate led some rich guy's goons to their door?

    • He's super visible now (thanks, Aerie) so I'm incredibly down with a rich guy trying to locate Nate (how on-brand), though I am also curious as to what he intends to do with him once he finds him! Interrogating him? Intimidation?? Run him out of the city??? Murder????? Employment??????

Sorry for all the questions lmao I've had like 2+ months to ruminate on things, this sounds like a good direction!

1 - what is the state of yennefer's relationship to the lynches following her actions as a cardinal in the aerie?

2 - yennefer will be functionally presenting herself as a hippie-style cult leader (think klaus from TUA) to try to attract a vaguely earthy-yet-hedonist following who believes that the gods are returning to earth and sent the displaced to provide guidance on how the humans of earth can prepare themselves for their eventual arrival. she's picking out stupid people and strays here, especially if they can spend their parents' money.

if new amsterdam's population is not amenable to it, she'll move to another megacity for it. her primary goal is to get enough people that she's financially and physically insulated from the consequences of her actions. she doesn't want to have to have a real job, but instead be a sort of 'religious/thought leader' type. how would this go for her?
