JOBS
Every character in Meadowlark has the opportunity to follow a career path that will offer them both plotting opportunities with the game as a whole, and avenues for which they can continue their individual arcs. This page is meant to offer some guidance on that process, as well as offer a means for us to organize and collect everyone's jobs in game so that we can keep them in mind as we design plots as the game progresses.
Keep in mind that no one has to go through legal avenues for jobs. Fight clubs, gambling dens, and illegal hovercar races are all available to different characters, but gaining notoriety takes time and largely involves gaining the right accesses. These are outlets that Morningstar will not be able to assist anyone in pursuing, as they don't require certification and won't be aboveboard. That's not to say that Morningstar themselves aren't involved in some of these outlets, but they are all reputation-based (either based on skill or otherwise)..
Finally, Morningstar can help someone get credentials for a job, but they cannot place someone in a job using their connections until they are an agent with Morningstar (players whose characters have earned this rank will be informed when the time comes). They won't give new Morningstar recruits access to any contacts in jobs for the sake of everyone's security, especially their agents, so please keep this in mind when you hope to pursue a job for your character in game!
You can feel free to have your character pursue any path, but bear in mind that everyone has to start out at the beginning or in entry level positions.
Here are some positions that your character can start out in:
- Rickshaw driver
- Food truck assistant
- Administrative Assistant at one of the many corporations in the city
- Bartender
- Barista in a high-end coffee shop
- Courier
- Warehouse worker
- Grocery store stocker
- Laboratory technician
There are some limitations on what people can pursue. Even if your character was highly trained and skilled in their world, there are some extreme limitations on what Morningstar - and El specifically - can provide for your character. This is not to say that your character can't pursue the training for the careers below, but it would take time and they'd have to do it alongside their current job or activities.
- Doctor
- Lawyer
- Corporate CEO or equivalent and similar positions
- Politician
- Journalist – a job like this would require a portfolio. Maintaining a blog would be enough to get a foot in the door, but they would have to establish themselves as both a good writer and capable of the research required.
- Artist (of any kind) – a portfolio would be required, depending on the line of work. Positions related to art are more open-ended and would be reviewed on a case by case scenario.
- Police officer – they would need to express interest early on in their time in getting their identities established so that El can ensure their background passes muster. Beyond that, they will need to undergo a long period of training before they are even allowed to put on a uniform. No one will just be a cop.
A part of our aim is to give everyone the freedom they want, but we also want to help create plot opportunities for our players. While we can't promise it immediately, we intend to look at the different outlets where characters are positioned so that we can introduce elements to give you things to play with as the game goes on. That includes NPCs, as well! Still, please keep in mind our notes on the NPC PAGE, as they remain the same. You can feel free to make up coworkers, bosses, and more. We may just add some spice as time goes on!
As your character begins to rise or change careers, please feel free to edit your comment as needed. You can also feel free to use this page as a guide on how to create CR in similar places!
Whether it's through a place of employment or shadier means, please reply here once you've decided upon your character's employment! To streamline things, we won't require anyone to touch base with us on plot engagement as long as you follow the conditions that we've set on this page. If you're ever uncertain, please feel free to contact us so we can assist you!
For career advancement as well as utilizing your character's job to engage with the overall game plot, please comment to the PLOT ENGAGEMENT page. Career advancement largely takes place after a period of time has passed, or your character has done something clever that helps them stand out at their job.
Please reply below with the form we've provided here under the header for "CURRENTLY EMPLOYED." If your character is not employed, please don't reply yet!
