POWERS

> POWERS

> BLUE POWERS

All characters with canon powers will be depowered on arrival in Meadowlark. If they try to access their powers, it will trigger a blue glow centered on their chest, though there won't be any feelings of pain or discomfort.

All players, regardless of whether their character had any canon powers or not, will now have the opportunity to give their character a new power. These powers are intended to be a reflection of who your character is as a person, as well as the circumstances of their life prior to their arrival in Meadowlark's world.

Players will be able to have this power adapt and change over their character's time in the game. This progression should remain within the type of power chosen, and should have clear links to character development, growing and changing with them through their experiences in-game. As such, players will have to submit power alterations here for mod approval, but know that our goal is not to restrict progression.

> EXAMPLES

If a character can create silence, this can evolve over time. What if the character wants their power to eventually steal sound from a room and move it elsewhere, almost like a living, breathing recording device? This will allow them to pass on information.

Another example is a character whose power is attached to light refraction going through intense trauma, and coming out the other end manipulating the other end of light: darkness, though they would not be able to do this without light to cast the shadows.

In setting up your power, we suggest that you think of its initial form as the most basic, limited version of its full potential. A "seed" power which can grow and evolve over time as the character adapts to the setting and changes according to their experiences.

As a big tip, we've learned over time that going broader in the overall scope of the power is a better move, rather than starting narrow. The seed itself should be the narrow presentation of that power, rather than the full extent of the power itself.

> LIMITATIONS

Unfortunately, there are some powers that simply won't be allowed within the limitations of the game. We reserve the right to add or remove abilities from this list.

  • Precognition

  • Instant death capabilities
  • Instant revival capabilities
  • Invincibility
  • Technopathy
  • Power negation
We also recommend avoiding powers that come too close to power unlocks via the blue stuff in each of the characters. While all of these can be used with NPCs, we feel like they'll be redundant with the blue ability since most of your character's interaction will be with PCs. These abilities are:

EMPATHIC SHARING: The empathy bond that's been present in game since the very beginning. When characters touch, they share emotions. This can be done among multiple characters. However, this is also one where empathy-related powers can easily go in a different direction.

MEMORY SHARE: Characters can touch one another and share a memory. Whether it's accidental or purposeful is up to them. Ease with this can grow with time.

DREAMWALKING OR SHARING: Characters can share dreams. While dreamwalking may imply more control, characters can develop that control via practice. For more information on our dreams mechanic, check out our page here.

POWER SHARING: A character can borrow another character's power by taking the object that comes out of their chest. These objects are unique to the character in question, and give off a "vibe" of that character. The object can take many forms (all inorganic), but aren't functional, meaning a gun won't shoot and a pen won't write. Manifesting these objects can happen by mistake, such as in a time of need, or on purpose by simply thinking about it, but if there isn't another Displaced nearby to take the object, it will disappear after ten seconds. The objects can also change over time in relation to a character's development. Only one character at a time can have the object, and there's no way to replicate it.

If a character has another character's chest object for 30 days IC, they can learn that character's power. This will essentially function as a new seed power, though the seed can take the form of any of the second character's abilities. After the character learns this new power, they can upgrade it the same way they would their own power, through power unlocks and development progression.

If your character has a power of this type already, please feel free to reach out to the mods—we have some ideas of how to expand it differently!

UNION ATTACKS: Aided by the object from the chest, they can fight in unison, seeming as if they're inside one another's heads without being that way. The object, in time, won't be necessary. This fighting ability will eventually culminate in a final, united attack, typically an amalgamation of the characters' powers. More than two characters can be a part of this attack at one time. During this time, both characters will glow blue (not just their chests, their whole bodies!) and will fight as a unit, sensing one another's thoughts and actions. If two characters are particularly close, they won't need the chest objects to pull this off after the first attempt. Once the union attack ends, the characters will feel drained of energy, although this can be worked through with time and practice.

> GOLD POWERS

As of Event 11, all characters now have access to a set of powers from the god, Gold. These cause their eyes to glow gold, and are centered around conflict, meaning that these powers will be inherently offensive.

OFFENSIVE POWER: Each character will have one unique power from Gold, much like their power from Blue, and will be able to upgrade it once a month. Just like Blue's powers, they'll start with a seed and expand from there, but must be offensive in some way. These powers cannot be shared.

BATTLE SPIRIT: All of the Displaced will have the ability to unlock a power called "Battle Spirit." Working at two levels, battle spirit will grant characters additional durability, strength, speed, as well as the ability to work in tandem with other Displaced. This power will only activate when someone is in physical conflict with someone else (so, no, battle spirit won't activate when you're arguing on the network, but it may if you're playing soccer).

LEVEL ONE: The first level will allow a Displaced to activate the power on its own. This is a weaker version of the power, granting the Displaced greater durability, strength, and speed. At this level, characters will be 3x their normal level of durable, strength, and speed.

LEVEL TWO: The second level of Battle Spirit will scale according to the number of people in a conflict together. Level Two will grant Displaced a healing factor. If they're with one other person, their strength, speed, and durability will be 4x better, with that number getting higher with each person added. At this level, the Displaced will be able to move in sync with the others around them through intuition. This, too, will get stronger depending on the number of people available.

ACTIVATION: Battle Spirit will be able to activate on accident. At first, it will leave its user tired, but more and more usage will allow them to grow used to it. Two Displaced fighting can also lead to an activation of Level Two, making it so that they can easily read each other's actions. Yes, that can be used in the fighting rings, too!

> PROGRESSING YOUR POWER

BLUE: Opportunities to level up your character's power progression will be available through plot involvement. This will mostly come up through mod-run events, and will be announced directly on the event planning posts, but they can also be accessed through individual characters' exploration of the plot that heavily involves usage of their powers during plot engagement.

Since powers reflect the character, power ups should ICly take place alongside an emotional or circumstantial experience for your character that changes them. The power up will not be approved without accounting for this in the "What Brought This About" section of the form. These changes don't need to be big, and they can even be circumstantial in your character learning more about themselves.

Since IC changes don't always line up with OOC opportunities, power up requests can be submitted at any time. For example, you may have successfully qualified for a power upgrade during the November event, but lack the IC circumstances to catalyze power progression until December. It's up to you when you decide your character is ready.

When it comes to these power ups, we also encourage you to be creative in the execution of that power. Not every power up has to be a streamlined power—unless that's what you'd prefer! We would prefer that you utilize the power as a reflection of your character's in-game development, rather than a strict linear power that simply grows stronger over time.

ADDING A POWER
Thanks to the always evolving blue stuff in all characters' chests, which you can read more on here, there is an opportunity for characters to share an object between one another for a month-long period (30 days, to be exact) of time and add a new seed power to their powerset. This month-long period can be accumulative.

◉ In order to grant the new power, the player will have to be granted a power up in one of the events (in our Event Aftermath posts).
◉ This new power will take the place of any evolution in their current power.
◉ In the future, players can choose between evolving their original power and the power they received from the object.
◉ The presentation of this seed can be any of the existing forms of that other character's power, but only one of them.
◉ How it evolves from that point is ultimately up to the player in question.

GOLD: Gold's powers can be levelled up once a month OOC, and require some form of IC conflict to do so. This can be anything from a spat on the network to a full out brawl between characters. New characters will have to wait an OOC month to claim their Gold power.

NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: Another type of body manipulation: Bone puppeting. Essentially, this is just the power to use broken a broken limb with the same strength/dexterity as if it weren't broken. It doesn't make it not hurt, it requires concentration, and it doesn't make the bone heal faster. Theoretically they could also break their own bones if they wanted to.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? They've broken a lot of bones so far in Meadowlark. Having to work around that has been symbolic of their current frustrating situation: they're alone, without resources, in an alien world where nothing works the way they want it to. Sniper has in the past put a huge amount of effort into pushing their body into nearly superhuman feats as a way of exerting control on the world around them. This would be an extension of that mindset fueled by their anxiety and frustration they feel being kneecapped by physical limitations. They were dealing with broken bones during the curing itself, and that nearly caused them to lose control of the situation.

WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? X’rhun is gradually finding his footing here, which is helping him to be a bit more sure about how he is able to reach out and help others. He was quick to volunteer and used his powers to aid the evacuation efforts for the Morningstar agents, for instance. Apart from that, tare two other tipping points. The first has been his attempts to mediate between Ardyn and (the now gone) Noctis and Noctis’ friends, which caused the manifestation of his powers in the first place. The second is the arrival of his student from home, Arya. Her presence especially has helped focus him, because he desires to protect her as best he can.

WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? rey has been doggedly pursuing training with daisy, twice a week, for the past few months. beyond that, though, she experienced a critical depression in december where she lost poe, finn, and a number of her cross-canon friends as well because they disappeared and she was abandoned -- again. this hit a severe point of trauma for her. she's been pulling herself out of it, but daisy disappearing temporarily was like the nail on the coffin to make her feel isolated and alone, empty. a vacuum power represents this feeling of loneliness/emptiness, which she is now starting to pull out of because daisy did return, and poe will be returning now too. my plan was to get this in pre-arrival log but i've been on hiatus so in theory the power adaptation happened before poe's return.

NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: Heat Absorption + Expulsion. Damian will be able to take in the heat of the area around him to increase the size of his flames or to project them off his body as a blast.

Damian cannot draw heat without a source, and so if it is cold he's SOL. He also he can't absorb it from his own fire (or fires created from his fire) and so he's reliant on his environment to support this ability.

As a side effect, he runs hotter than most people now.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? Damian has been smothering his feelings since his father arrived in January, as it stirred up a lot of complicated feelings of abandonment and loathing. With how suppresses things until he can't anymore, then lashes out in a fit of rage when that internalized pressure reaches its peak, it's only natural to have a power that reacts much the same way. He'll have been passively gathering heat for a while. And discovering that Kara Zor-El has disappeared will be the last bit of stress and loss he can take, leading to an extreme emotional outburst unlike any of his game so far. His power will manifest for the first time as an explosive blast.

CURRENT POWER: Neural Programming, initially the ability to send thoughts to and translate the short term memories of individual people - essentially functioning as telepathy.
NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: The neural activity of a crowd no longer comes to him as a jumble of noise he has to unscramble but as easily distinguishable individual minds. This is due to his brain now automatically processing individual neural signatures.

It's kind of like everyone in his vicinity now temporarily appears as a(n anonymous, he still has to read them to find out anything about them,) contact when he flips on the power switch rather than his having to actively decipher minds to access them. As a result he'll be able to broadcast thoughts to more than one person at a time - like a mass text. As a very basic example, he could now send "Hi there" to twenty people in his general vicinity simultaneously but couldn't simultaneously text everyone with "Hi (name)", even if he knew the names of those twenty people. Personalised thoughts still require personalised broadcasts, he's not advanced enough to employ mind-macros or carry on multiple conversations at the same time (another real world example, he has to swap between windows to read & chat individually). This means it's only really useful as a broadcast tool rather than a conversational tool as he has to be actively listening to a mind in order to hear a response.

This also enhances his precision for implanting & reading the thoughts of an individual, ie where before he didn't hear the UNA agents coming when they arrived in the street because he was so distracted by all the other minds, he would now immediately be able to identify that a new mind had entered the vicinity thanks to it having a different signature to the rest and could then hone in on it and work undistracted on listening to that mind alone.

(breakdown of this level of ability:
- differentiating between individual minds in a crowd
- using that differentiation to mass broadcast to multiple nearby/"audible" minds
- related ability to pinpoint and read individual minds with little difficulty despite the neural noise of a crowd
- (with training) ability to identify individuals he's in regular contact with by their neural signatures).

WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? Stephen has been practicing the ability to be specific with his power for a while. Sitting in streets, trying to pluck out and follow the thoughts of strangers before they can disappear back into the fray. It's doable but it takes a lot of work and active thought to pick things apart, which is something he learned again during the recent UNA raids when he found himself trying to play lookout but was initially baffled by the sheer quantity of minds in the building.

As stress has been a near constant companion for Stephen, this encounter wasn't enough to trigger growth. However, with Oktoberfest's drunken mind-reading adventures finding him having fun for the first time in a long time while utilising his power to identify individual thoughts amongst a stationary crowd, the sudden kick of positive emotion will have triggered the new development and pushed it in that direction.

CURRENT POWER: Portal-based teleportation: At present, this manifests as portals opening and closing within his sightline, at about 6x6 feet.
NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: Although Fitz has briefly been able to use his portals to cut through bits of solid matter, if he can see around them, this new adaptation will kick things up a notch: If he’s touching the surface of something, he can open a portal there to the other side (i.e. with his hand on touching a wall, he can open a portal to pass through to the other side of it, into the next room). Proximity and taction are necessary for his power, at this level.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? With the move to stand with and for Morningstar, Fitz is looking beyond the immediacy of what affects himself and the displaced. Before, he was beginning to nudge others to act and make the best use of their talents, believing they might be able to make a difference in solving the mystery of their predicament: Now he’s working with others outright, taking concrete steps to act and lead where possible, for both the betterment of the displaced and New Amsterdam.

As his perspective expands, so does the purview of his ability.

CURRENT POWER: Metal mimicry (titanium). At its current stage, she can only transform selective parts of her body and only hold the change with intense concentration. Otherwise it reacts instinctively to danger.
NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: The shift can cover more 'ground' on her body (both arms rather than just one, for example) with finer control and less focus required to maintain it.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? A deeper understanding and acceptance of the world she now lives in and her place in it. Peggy discovered her ability during the September raids and initially resisted it, but has since recognised it as a tool and practiced diligently to strengthen and control it. She has a theory that the abilities were granted to them for a purpose (likely to protect people, so they should use them to do just that). She's also taken on the responsibility of rebuilding Morningstar, working not only to help herself and her fellow displaced but the people of New Amsterdam who she understands need the organisation just as much, if not more, than they do. She's stepped up to take the lead, to work with everyone as a team, and to use every trick and tactic in their arsenal to make it through — together. As her role in this world grows, so does her ability.

NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: Currently, Daisy has to make a concentrated effort to obtain and then break down items in order to utilize them to make new ones. With this upgrade in her powers, she will be able to summon and access supplies from within a six foot radius of her body. If these supplies are not surface-level, she will still need to exert energy and attention in order to break down the larger item in question. For example: she could retrieve the metal shell around a toaster on the kitchen counter with ease, but obtaining the heat coils from within would require time and energy in order to break down the toaster first. However, she would not need to physically move to the toaster to obtain it, or hold it in her hand to break it down. Once the pieces she needed were removed, they would come to her.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? Lately, Daisy has been making a concerted effort to make the best of the situations she's found herself in. She's slowly growing past her hesitance to throw herself into the Morningstar fray, she's finding a place for herself as the de facto powers trainer, and she's establishing strong bonds both romantically and platonically with people from other worlds. She's using her environment instead of being beaten down by it, and her power will then reflect this change in attitude.

NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: The ability to summon two shields at once, placed anywhere within his line of sight. Able to keep these force fields steady for as long as his focus remains unbroken.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? The ability to summon two force field shields is indicative of a certain kind of development for Markus — the continual want to keep everyone safe (taking a bullet for Connor instead of protecting himself, putting forth the safehouse initiative, trying to constantly be a pillar of emotional reliability for others) which has only grown stronger over the course of the game. The longer his stay in New Amsterdam, the more he sees the displaced as “his people”, and his want to keep them safe intensifies. Growing in exponential ways, thus granting him two shields instead of one.

After Connor’s departure, Markus also had important conversations with both Prompto and Fitz about not keeping all of his physical and emotional burdens to himself. Symbolically, possessing the ability to summon two shields at once illustrates the idea that he can protect others while still keeping his own safety and health in mind. (A shield to spare for his own person, so to speak.)

NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: More physical manipulation: Blood manipulation. This is a very narrow form. basically, they can stop themself from bleeding (or make themself bleed a lot if they wanted to. ). Like the bone power, it requires concentration and energy to maintain. Goes for both internal and external injuries.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? During the UNA raid, Sniper's bone power saved their life. That event was also a progression for Sniper; it was a hinge point in which they began to feel like they were gaining some traction in the world and with the other displaced. They're learning how to be an effective force in this world, learning to trust in the capabilities of their allies, and learning to rely on their own new powers more. So, this power develops as a companion to the power that saved them. Like the other power, it arises out of physical circumstance, as Sniper was wounded and bled during the raid.

CURRENT POWER: Life steal that imbues Clarke with energy; at will, she can cause this life steal to cause pain to someone else.
NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: Rather than simply giving Clarke energy, Clarke will be able to heal any wounds as long as the person she's touching is alive. The more pain she causes through the connection means that she can heal all the quicker.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? Clarke doesn't have a very good relationship with herself, and thus causes a lot of harm to herself by trying to do "good" or what's "necessary" for others. A large theme of her dream plot revolved around the amount of pain she inflicts on herself or causes for others, while being alone. She also has a strong survival instinct that conflicts with her mindset when it comes to self harm. However, she's very aware that she's surviving regardless of this, and how much that survival defines her upbringing. A combination of the dreams (unconscious) and Damian's post and Clarke's conflict with others on it (conscious) lead to her knowing she needs to take care of herself. The pain aspect comes in where she doesn't think she can really help but harm others to further herself.

NAME: Cain

CURRENT POWER: Spatial displacement. Ability to shift anything within a 12x10x10in cube of space visible distances, currently restricted to inanimate objects.
NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: Increase the size of the space he can affect to a 3x3x3ft area. Still restricted to inanimate objects but can now move space beyond visible distances (such as behind a wall). Distance is also increased from a 30-foot radius to 60, effectively doubled.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? The mission against the UNA soldiers was the first time Cain was able to fully utilize his power in a real and impactful way. He took down one soldier through a creative method with Fitz's help, where he ripped out a piece of a soldier's armor with his ability and shot his gun into the vulnerable gap. It was also his first time killing someone in New Amsterdam. This experience was significant for Cain, because it reminded him of what it's really like to be at war -- as he was before his arrival here -- and what his power could do to save his own skin (as well as the lives of his teammates) in tense situations. The power-up itself is fairly straightforward. Now that he knows what he can do, it makes sense that he would want to be capable of more, hence the size and distance increase.

NEW POWER ADAPTATIONS: With concentration, must be within 5-10' of the target and have a general accurate feel of their emotions, she can mimic their power for up to five minutes (not always reliable). This will be easier with people that have given her permission/that she has already mimicked, and people she is emotionally close with.
WHAT BROUGHT THIS ABOUT? She has been training toward a power she thought she had but did not, and in the dreamscape was able to finally access and use to help herself and those close to her. She gathered a small group of volunteers in New Tokyo to help her test this new power to see if she was correct and how best to make use of it. It greatly fuels her desire to be of good use in this new place, as well as to help the people there, displaced and non displaced alike.
