Yeah, my idea for companion bots is essentially to give them little robot porgs that are incredibly charming and also help with homework or whatever. Like, an Echo mixed with an actual pet. So making a new line of them that's especially cute/new and easily marketed, plus serving more of a droid function (the Amazon Echo parts) on top of a pet function. So not ... verging on AI, which wouldn't be an issue since even realistic pet intelligence levels wouldn't include sentience or self-awareness!
