William would definitely care if he realized that his name would be directly attached. But, these kinds of findings do belong out in the world. So barring any efforts to hack the information into a scientific journal or public study, he'd have to go more general and leak documents to the network at large. Could he send documents, information, pictures, or findings, possibly, to a local news source. Obviously, he couldn't hide it's from him, but maybe he could send the information to a third party who could release it themselves?

His aim would be getting the information out, yes, but not putting himself at risk in the process, unless he has no other choice in that.

So, his aim would be sending the information to a third party. Barring that, releasing it himself online.
