Please let me know if any of this is confusing, and I'll do my best to explain it! World of Warcraft is... what it is, and it's annoying and complex so I don't blame you if you need anything clarified.

The character, Jaquabel, died and then was raised again in a 'special' way that distinguished her from WoW's rank and file of zombies -- she retained most of her independence and personality, but little of the emotions and memory of her previous life -- and most importantly, subservient to the will of the Lich King who controls all the undead forces of Azeroth. Mostly. She got free of being subservient thanks to one of the opposing forces of nature/holiness, but the rest of it sort of stuck with her.

Her power, and her undead life (and everything about it), are just side effects of being powered by the cosmic force of death/undeath/necromancy in the world of World of Warcraft.
